The Ashland, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department NYPD style patch honors the ultimate sacrifice taken by NYPD officers that were in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Ashland is known for preserving anthracite’s legacy. The center of the patch features the traditional Pennsylvania keystone. Top left, inside the keystone is the Mothers’ Memorial that is the only bronze reproduction of Whistler’s Mother in the world. Top right is the Ashland Boys’ Association Homecoming Parade logo. The Ashland Boys’ Association erected the Mother’s Memorial, and both symbolize abiding affection for family and community felt in Ashland and in the Industrial United States. The Mothers' Memorial was listed by the National Park Service on the National Register of Historic Places back in 2020. The Ashland Boys’ Association is a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker. The bottom left, is the popular “Lokie” steam train named the Henry Clay. Right, is the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine Tour. The Pioneer Tunnel and “Lokie” Steam Train are a Top 10 tourist attraction in Pennsylvania. Adjacent, to the Pioneer Tunnel is the Museum of Anthracite Mining. In the middle of the keystone is a Black Diamond. Ashland High School was nicknamed the Black Diamonds representing the anthracite coal region. Ashland, PA is in honor of Henry Clay’s Estates near Lexington, Kentucky.
This is Frackville, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department previous patch that represents a stickman inside a traditional Pennsylvania keystone. The stickman means Frackville’s geographical location and slogan, “The Crossroads of Schuylkill County.” The head of the stickman is Frackville, the horizontal line is Interstate 81, and the two legs are northbound and southbound Pennsylvania Route 61. The pick and shovel symbolize the anthracite coal region. The north end of Frackville was the Mahanoy Plane that was an inclined plane railroad that hoisted millions of tons coal from Gilberton up the Broad Mountain into Frackville to fill the railroad cars. The Mahanoy Plane is a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker. The trees are representing the town parks and recreation. The gears for manufacturing, cross for the churches, and the star for unity. Daniel Frack, Sr., was the founder of the borough.
The Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department features the Service Electric Cable Antenna. Service Electric in Mahanoy City was the first cable television system invented in the United States. It was created in 1948 by John Walson. The "Birth of Cable Television" is a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker. The coal breaker symbolizes the Mahanoy Valley which is historic as a major anthracite coal producing region. The the bear represents the Mahanoy Area Golden Bears Mascot. Mahanoy is named after the Indian term “mahoni” meaning a salt lick.
The Minersville, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department features the coal mine, miner, pick and shovel, representing the laborers in the anthracite coal region just like the boroughs name in honor.
The Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department features “First County Seat” with the first Schuylkill County courthouse on the patch which was built in 1816. Schuylkill County was created via an Act of Assembly on March 1, 1811, from portions of Berks, Lancaster and Northampton counties. More land was added to the county in 1818, from Columbia and Lehigh counties. The county seat was moved to Pottsville in 1850. Orwigsburg was named after the founder Peter Orwig.
The Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department patch represents its history with two pine trees in the middle of the patch on the first settlement surrounded by grove of pines. In the points of the star represents coal for the anthracite coal region. Pine Grove was a transportation hub with the Union Canal and railroads that carried anthracite coal from the Schuylkill County’s northern regions to Harrisburg, Reading, Philadelphia, and beyond. The Union Canal is a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker.
The Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Bureau of Police keystone patch reflects on the city’s history as, “Gateway to the Anthracite.” When anthracite coal was king, the City of Pottsville boomed in railroads and industry surging a development in national economy. The coal miners in the anthracite mines worked in harsh working conditions for low wages. Pottsville at times was a center for labor disputes and strikes between the United Mine Workers Union and the coal companies. President Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to get involved with labor strikes, and he forced both parties to settle the strike. President Roosevelt visited Pottsville in 1914. Pottsville is also known in the beer industry having the Oldest Brewery in the United States that was established in 1829 – D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. The Pottsville Maroons NFL Professional Football Team and Mollie Maguires Execution at Schuylkill County Prison are both Pennsylvania State Historical Markers. The Henry Clay Monument sits in honor of the great American statesman because he favored a tariff on coal which helped the anthracite coal region. Pottsville is the Schuylkill County’s seat since 1850, was laid out by founder John Pott in 1816; incorporated as a borough in 1828; granted a third-class city charter in 1911, city government began in 1913.
The Saint Clair Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department patch represents the saint symbol, the town clock, churches, and railroads. Saint Clair was named after Saint Clair Nichols, who owned the farm and land on which the borough was built. The saint symbol represents the former Saint Clair Area High School, “Saints.” The town clock is located outside the Saint Clair borough municipal building. The churches in the borough reflected the religious and ethnic diversity of its inhabitants with its membership of most ethnic groups attended a congregation serving only that group. As the railroads boomed in anthracite coal region. Saint Clair became one of the largest coal yards of the world. The coal yard was built on large swamp at the southern end of the borough. In 1868, Coal Miner John Siney formed the Workingmen's Benevolent Association (WBA) with the objective of trying to improve pay and working conditions. John Siney is a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker for his success.
The Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department previous patch featured an excursion train that represents the popular Schuylkill Haven Train Station. The train station was originally built by the Reading Railroad. The railroads in Schuylkill Haven Borough were an important key to the community’s economy with the anthracite coal industry. Schuylkill Haven was named from hidden stream plus a shelter or harbor for shipping coal. This current patch represents Schuylkill Haven and the Pennsylvania keystone.
The Shenandoah, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department represents a traditional keystone with the Pennsylvania Coat of Arms in the middle. Shenandoah was named after and Indian name meaning “sprucy stream.”
The Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, Borough Police Department patch represents Tamaqua’s history. The term “Tamaqua” came from the territories of Schuylkill Townships and West Penn. Specifically, the term is in honor of the Tuscarora king of the Turkey Clan named Chief Tahkamochk, or popularly called as Tam-a-kwah, the “running water.” The name of this borough is the only one in the world.
The West Penn Township, Pennsylvania Police Department patch represents, the "Largest Township in Pennsylvania" around the Pennsylvania seal with an American eagle on top. West Penn Township extends from the top of the Blue Mountain to the South and Tamaqua Borough to the North in Schuylkill County. The Township is approximately 58 square miles with over 150 miles of roads. The Township has three zip codes: 18211 Andreas, 17960 New Ringgold, and 18252 Tamaqua within its boundaries .
